Richard Brunson, D.M.A. - Over 20 Years of Teaching Music
Based in South Bend, Indiana, Richard Brunson, D.M.A., is a private music instructor at Elkhart School of Music. He teaches students how to play piano and brass instruments. Before this role, Richard Brunson spent over two decades teaching music at both the high school and college levels in Utah, Indiana, and Wisconsin. Some of the places he has taught include Alta High School in Salt Lake City, Utah; Salt Lake City Community College in Salt Lake City; and Medford School District in Medford, Wisconsin.
In addition to academic teaching, Dr. Brunson is active in professional societies. In January 2025, he presented a lecture on composer Ralph Vaughan Williams's opera "The Pilgrim's Progress" at the annual conference of the International Conductors Guild in London.
Dr. Brunson is also an experienced choir director. From 2016 to 2023, he was the artistic director for the Central Chamber Chorale, a nonprofit arts organization in Marshfield, Wisconsin. He auditioned singers, planned and led weekly rehearsals, hired instrumentalists, and chose the repertoire for two annual concert runs. From 2015 to 2023, he was choir director at the Faith Lutheran Church in Marshfield where he recruited singers, chose repertoire, ran weekly rehearsals, and directed the church choir twice a month.
Occasionally, Dr. Brunson does guest conducting at festivals and contests. He has guest conducted at the Associacio Musical El Verger Wind Band in Velencia, Spain, and the London Classical Soloists Orchestra. He has also played horn with the Central Wisconsin Symphony and Las Vegas Philharmonic. He holds a PhD in conducting from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas.
